What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP) is a common disorder in males over 50 years. About 50% of
males over the age of 60 have some sort of prostate disorder. The prevalence is as high as 88% for
those over the age of 70.
In its early stage, enlarged prostate gland does not exhibit any symptoms. However, the
continual enlarged prostate gland will eventually squeeze and narrow the urethra and lead to urinary problems.
Stages of Prostatic Hyperplasia
Prostatic hyperplasia is generally divided into 3 stages:
Stage 1 : Also known as the symptom stimulation stage. The main symptoms include frequent
nocturnal urination, posterior urethral perineal discomfort, longer urination time and narrowing of
urine stream. At this stage, the residual urine volume is usually less than 50ml and the urine flow
chart shows a normal curve.
Stage 2 : Also known as the residual urine occurrence stage. There is increased severity in the
symptoms mentioned above. In addition, urination now requires exertion of force on the stomach.
The residual urine volume is between 50 and 150ml accompanied by the sensation of residual urine.
There may be sudden acute urinary retention or infection. The urine flow chart shows multiple wave
curves.
Stage 3 : Also known as the decompensated bladder or bladder distension and urine retention stage.
The residual urine volume exceeds 150ml, accompanied by urinary retention, overflowing
incontinence or kidney dysfunction. The urine flow chart shows a low plateau curve.
