What is snoring and what are the causes? 

The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air 

through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. 

Examples of these include: 

• Obstructed nasal airways caused by mucous membranes in the nose becoming 

swollen 

• Poor muscle tone in the muscles of the tongue and throat 

• Breathing through the mouth whilst sleeping, causing membranes of the nose 

and throat to become dry and swollen 

Particularly at night, these membranes become dry and swollen and tend to vibrate 

noisily when we breathe in and out, resulting in the sounds we hear as snoring.
