Ngoh Hiang, or 五香 in Mandarin, is a Teochew/Hokkien traditional dish, made from a mixture of minced pork, fresh prawn, water chestnut and seasoned with five-spice powder (五香粉, hence its name), rolled up in beancurd skin.

The difference between the 2 versions is that the Teochew version added Yam/Taro, whereas the Hokkien one does not.
Ngoh Hiang can be both deep fried or steamed. Both present different tastes and have their own supporters. A deep fried Ngoh Hiang, which is by far the more common way of eating, is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.
The steam version is probably healthier and taste more pronounced with natural flavour of the pork and prawn, especially with fresh ingredients, since it is able to retain taste better than the deep fried version.
Usually, you will see Ngoh Hiang served with condiments such as sweet chilli sauce/chinese sweet soya sauce.
This dish is easily identifiable by its 5-spice fragrance. Not to be mixed up with Hei Zou, 虾枣, which is cut-up, and further coated with flour before deep fried.
The local Chinese used to make Ngoh Hiang during Lunar New Year but it is time consuming, handmade Ngoh Hiang is becoming rarer during the festive season.
The dish itself is not rare. Ngoh Hiang can be purchased from markets or as part of Ngoh Hiang Prawn Fritters from hawker stalls. Problem is, they just do not taste nice. Not sure if it is an issue with machine made Ngoh Hiang or lack of good recipe or ingredient, or simply lack of passion. This issue is rectified with our Ngoh Hiang, which promises to taste better than any that you have tried.
Every steps from peeling the chestnut, shelling and de-veining the prawn, to mixing all the ingredients together, we make sure that the outcome is consistent, before finally wrapping them and readying them to deliver to you.
Our Ngoh Hiang comes in 2 different sizes. A small 8 piecepack or a large 16 piece pack, in a plastic container box.
Since it is entirely handmade, there will be slight variation in weight but per box is minimally 850gm for the small pack and minimally 1.7kg for the big pack.
Why is our Ngoh Hiang better?
Fresh ingredient. We use fresh ingredient as much as we can. We firmly believes that nothing beats freshness.
We also ensure that our Ngoh Hiang's quality is consistent, making sure that the taste is always what our taste buds like.
