Fungsi thermal paste adalah untuk menyalurkan panas dari processor ke heatsink. Karena permukaan pada processor dan heatsink tidak rata sehingga butuh penghubung supaya panas bisa ditransfer secara maksimal.
Jika tidak memakai thermal Paste, transfer panas/ heat dari prosesor ke HSF jadi tidak sempurna. Efeknya Prosesor akan menjadi cepat panas dan suhunya akan melambung tinggi sehingga komputer akan mati sendiri jika prosesor dilengkapi program otomatisasi suhu.
Tujuan thermal paste adalah mengisi rongga - rongga yang terbentuk oleh IHS dan HSF. Jika rongga tersebut tidak diisi otomatis penampang yang bersentuhan atara HSF dengan IHS lebih untuk memaksimalkan konduksi panas maka pori ini diisi oleh thermal paste.
