H4 Fitment & Function

The H4 Bulb is a twin filament bulb, this means it operates high and low beam from one bulb. Only one H4 bulb will be fitted to each headlamp. It is the most popular bulb and was released in 1971, it quickly became the predominant headlamp bulb throughout the world.

H4 bulbs have a 3 pin base which fit directly into the bulb holder, the 3 pins are positioned on the base in such a way that the bulb can only be fitted in the correct anglular position and one way only, if there were no pins the bulb could be fitted upside-down, resulting in the beam pattern being entirely wrong, low beam would become high beam and point to the wrong side of the road vice-versa.The H1 was the first halogen lamp approved for automotive use. It was introduced in 1962 by a group of European bulb and headlamp manufacturers. The bulb was not approved for use in the US until 1997.
