What is
 Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D is both a vitamin and a hormone. It's a vitamin because your body cannot absorb calcium without it; it's a hormone because your body manufactures it in response to your skin's exposure to sunlight.

There are two major forms of vitamin D, and both have the word calciferol in their names. In Latin, calciferol means "calcium carrier." Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol) have similar actions in the body and can both be found in fortified food and supplements.

Studies have shown that D3 may be more effective than D2 in raising Vitamin D blood sugar levels. It is also better to consume the D3 form as D2 is prone to producing erratically low vitamin D blood test results.

Strong evidence reveals that the combination of vitamin D and calcium supplements can be quite helpful for preventing and treating osteoporosis. You can't build bone without calcium, and you can't properly absorb and utilize calcium without adequate intake of vitamin D. Other potential uses of vitamin D have little supporting evidence.

We strongly suggest you take Vitamin D3 together with a high quality calcium supplement such as Healthy Origins Vitamin K2 (MK-7) 100mcg 180 Veggie Softgels to ensure maximum benefits for your body. However this combination might interfere with some of the effects of drugs in the calcium-channel blocker family. Thus if you are on any medication, it is very important that you consult your family doctor before trying this combination.

How much should one consume Vitamin D?
Dosages of vitamin D are often expressed in terms of international units (IU) rather than milligrams. A leading public health authority in USA, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), formerly called the Institute of Medicine (IoM), has issued the latest guidelines for Recommended Dietary Allowance of Vitamin D:

The NAM has also cautioned that vitamin D blood levels of >50ng/mL (and daily intakes above 4,000 IU) can put people at risk of adverse health effects. Excessive intake of 10,000 IU or more daily can potentially result in hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the blood) with symptoms including constipation, confusion, weakness, loss of appetite and painful calcium deposits.

Based on the above NAM guidelines, this shop recommends 2,400 IU as a perfectly safe and therapeutic dosage level for adults. Since this is an economy size, this product can be shared amongst the entire family too!

Healthy Origins Vitamin D3, 2,400 IU is a key nutrient manufactured in a highly absorbable liquid softgel form. Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the body from sunlight and only a small amount can be obtained from food. The winter season and many sunblock products inhibit the body's ability to produce optimal levels of Vitamin D. As a result, Vitamin D3 supplementation becomes even more necessary to ensure your body receives an adequate supply.
