A ginger from montane forests in the Himalayas to 1700 m (5600 ft.) with shoots to about 1.2 m (4 ft.) tall that spring from an underground rhizome.
In summer, small flowers are produced from a compact inflorescence at ground level, followed by a very attractive cluster of bright red fruits.
. In winter the shoots die down to the ground. One of the hardier gingers, Z. chrysanthum does well in most temperate climates with reasonably warm summers and winters without excessive freezes.
Hardiness can be improved by a thick cover of mulch during the cold part of the year.
