The compass finds magnetic north with a little rolling motion of the watch. This belt clip watch is really handy, with a flip up of the watch you can access and use all the features. With reasonable care you should not have a problem with damaging the lens. Walmart price was much cheaper than the store at the mall. Only negative is the display can be hard to read at certain angle. Like hanging on your belt loop, sitting in a chair, and looking down you need to tilt it up to see it. Not bad enough to be a concern.
