The grinding mechanism is made from ceramic, which is even harder than steel and therefore lasts for a particularly long time. It is resistant to abrasion or corrosion and therefore looks almost as good as new even after years of use.
Clean inner side before first use. Using a brush to remove surface dust should be sufficient, water cleaning is not necessary for a wooden pepper grinder. Unlike a finished wood surface, water will get absorbed into unfinished wood. You can also grind up some of the rice grains(uncooked) to clean out the grinding mechanism.
