USING the Rosewood KILN

Using the KILN

Regardless the Polycarbonate or the Rosewood version, both are designed to be used in the same ways.

If you are unsure of how the KILN works, please read the user manual below first.

The hardcase of your guitar is a good compliment to the KILN. Keep your guitar within its hardcase offers protection to your guitar.

The hardcase can be totally opened or slightly opened during usage (treatment). Both ways are sufficient for air circulation to take place.

In terms of the immediate operating environment, it doesn't matter if the KILN is operating within a space with air-conditioned or not. It works nevertheless.

Allow up to 8 hours for each treatment. If the initial treatment didn't yield sufficient changes, continue the treatment for another 2 to 3 times.

The Rosewood KILN cannot overdry your guitar because its heat amount is carefully calibrated to dehumidify sufficiently but not overdrying. Moreover the present of air circulation will also ensure that.

Take note; the KILN is not designed to operate in outdoors environment. If the KILN is used in ways that are not in line with the stated ways in its manual,  damages caused to guitars will be the responsibilities of the users.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ), the KILN in Rosewood

Q1: How does the Rosewood KILN dehumidify?

The Rosewood KILN dehumidifies by three key principles of wood drying. More reading can be found on page 8 of this document: Drying Hardwood Lumber

Q2: How do I know that my guitar has been dehumidified?

Before using the Rosewood KILN, measure the string height at 12th fret. Reduction in string height is expected after that. The reduction indicates that the Rosewood KILN has dehumidified your guitar.

Q3: How frequent should I use the Rosewood KILN on my guitar?

There is no hard or fast rule on the frequency of use. You can use it when you suspect your guitar(s) has taken in excessive moisture due to prolonged exposure to high humidity environment. Increase in string height (action) can be a trigger as well. Starters could stick to 2 to 3 times in a month sporadically.

Q4: Will the Rosewood KILN damage my guitar’s top plate?

The designated contact area is layered with soft damping materials that will leave no trace on your guitar.

Q5: The Rosewood KILN makes direct contacts with my guitar. Will it scratch my guitar?

As addressed in Q4.

Q6: Will it overheat?

The Rosewood KILN is designed to operate within a predetermined temperature range that is regulated by power adapter. The heat produced is also dissipated by means of convection therefore overheating isn't likely at all.

Q7: At what temperature the guitar will suffer irreversible damages?

In general, wood acoustic guitars that are assembled by means of gluing will be affected structurally at temperature beyond 65°C. However, non-wood acoustic guitars possess their specific temperature ranges which vary according to their ways of construction.

Q8: What is the maximum temperature produced by the dehumidifier?

Most wood glues lose their adhesiveness when heated to 60˚C to 65˚C. The Rosewood KILN’s operating temperature is calibrated way below this range.

Q9: Will enclosing my guitar in its case help in speeding up the dehumidification process?

No. The Rosewood KILN's operation is calibrated for 8 hours. Enclosing both your guitar and the Rosewood KILN is not recommended.

Q10: The Rosewood KILN is inserted into my guitar’s soundbox. Would the heating cause damages?

As addressed in Q6.

Q11: Will the Rosewood KILN burn my guitar?
The heat produced isn't enough to spark a flame.

Q12: Can I use the Rosewood KILN to dehumidify my guitar in stand up position?

The Rosewood KILN is designed to dehumidify your guitars whilst in supine (laid down flat) position.

Q13: Will heat from the Rosewood KILN cause cables of installed guitar pickups to melt?

Most properly installed guitar pickups have the cables tuck close to the interior of the guitar's soundbox. While the heat produced isn't enough to melt cables, avoid direct contact between the Rosewood KILN and pickup cables is recommended.

Q14: Is heater plate's area (see overview image) too hot to touch?

Yes. The heater within the Rosewood KILN can reach temperature that may be scalding. Please avoid making direct contact with the heater plate's area.

Q15: Can a guitar be considered too wet to be treated by dehumidification?

No. Guitars are made from instrument grade woods which means they are dried to a range of wood moisture content (WMC) from 8 to 10%. Even if your guitar(s) may have taken in excessive moisture, they will not reach the point of "too wet".
