Discover the benefits of this classic, natural remedy
Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate) is a water-soluble, bitter-tasting, white or colourless compound.
Uses and Benefits of Epsom Salts
1. For relaxation and relieving of muscle aches
During times of stress, the level of magnesium is depleted while adrenaline is increased in the body. When dissolved in warm bathwater, Epsom Salt replenishes this level of magnesium while the magnesium ions help to produce serotonin for lowering adrenaline, thus creating a feeling of calm and relaxation.
In addition, Epsom Salt temporarily relieves muscle aches and stiffness of joints. The magnesium in Epsom Salt acts as a muscle relaxant and relieves muscle aches.
For soaking in a bath, dissolve 375 gm of Epsom Salt in an average-size bath of warm water.
2. For foot bath treatments
Epsom Salt is also widely used in foot bath treatments for the relieving of tired, aching feet through the muscle-relaxing properties of the compound.
For an Epsom Salt foot soak, dissolve one cup of Epsom Salt in a large foot basin of warm water.
3. For treatment of constipation and toxin elimination
Esentiel Epsom Salt is food grade, meaning that it is safe for consumption.
Epsom Salt is a natural laxative that can be used for short term relief of constipation. Taken orally, it is a detoxifying agent that can be used for colon cleansing. The salt acts as a laxative by drawing water into the intestines from surrounding body tissues and can bring about temporary relief from constipation, between 30 minutes and six hours after ingestion.
Note: a healthcare provider should be consulted before using Epsom Salt for constipation relief or colon cleansing. Possible side effects include bloating, cramping, diarrhoea, gas or increased thirst.
4. For use as a fertilizer
Epsom Salts can also be used as a fertilizer to help with magnesium and sulphur deficiency in the soil. Symptoms of magnesium and sulphur deficiency in plants include yellowing between leaf veins, and the curling of leaves.
Epsom Salt can also be applied as a foliar spray for citrus crops, tomatoes, and lettuces by dissolving 375 gm of Epsom Salt in 20 litres of water. Please seek the help of an agricultural specialist for further advice on the use of Epsom Salt on plants.
