Czar Alexander III was born in Saint Petersburg, and was the second son of Alexander II and Princess Marie of Hesse. Alexander bore little resemblance to his soft-hearted, liberal father, yet was an enthusiastic amateur musician and patron of the ballet. He also enjoyed the reputation of being of the same rough texture as the great majority of the Russian people.
