Para Peneliti dari Oregon State University sedang berusaha memasarkan dan membudidayakan tomat ungu. Tomat ungu pertama kali ditemukan pada tahun 1960-an, para peneliti menjuluki tomat ungu dengan dengan sebutan Indigo Rose, tomat ini mengandung antioksidan yang diperoleh dari blueberry.

Tomat Ungu atau Indigo Rose merupakan hasil perkawinan antara Blueberry dan tomat merah. Tomat ungu ini mengandung Anthocyanin yang sangat tinggi yang telah terbukti dapat membantu fungsi kognitif dan mengurangi peradangan serta stres. Para peneliti mengatakan tomat ungu sangat baik bagi kesehatan dari pada tomat merah.

Peneliti mengatakan di wilayah Amerika Serikat tomat ungu lebih diminati dibandingkan sayur-sayur yang lain seperti kentang, selada dan bawang.

Selain itu, rupanya masih ada manfaat lain dari tomat hasil rekayasa genetika ini. Tomat ungu hasil rekayasa genetika ini bisa menjadi senjata baru dalam melawan kanker.

Buah yang rasanya dan baunya seperti tomat merah normal ini, telah diberikan dua gen dari bunga snapdragon yang menghasilkan warna gelap. Warna khas diciptakan oleh pigmen antioksidan yang melindungi terhadap penyakit termasuk kanker, gangguan jantung dan diabetes.

Tomat bertekstur padat berair, bijinya kecil dan tersebar keseluruh daging buah. Tomat ungu disebut juga sebagai super tomato atau indigo rose. Varietas ini merupakan jenis tomat generasi terbaru, warna ungunya sama seperti warna ungu pada blueberry.
