Made from acid-free, archival quality polypropylene which contains an additional additive that allows it to biodegrade when tested according to the ASTM D5511. ASTM testing indicates this product will biodegrade when buried in an anaerobic landfill. Because of the wide variation in landfill systems, actual timing may vary. Incidental parts (handles and clasp) are not expected to biodegrade.
In testing, C-Line sheet protectors treated with EcoPure (04907) exhibit a 9.13% weight loss after 90 days at 52 ±2° Celsius while untreated products showed virtually no weight loss. Specifically, the treated sample showed 1.953 Grams of Gaseous Carbon Recovered out of 21.4 Theoritical Grams while the untreated sample showed 0.005 Grams of Gaseous Carbon Recovered out of 21.4 Theoritical Grams.
Tests are generally conducted using 20% to 30% solids content; solids content in naturally wetter landfills range from 55% to 65%, while the driest landfills may reach 93%. This does not mean that the product will continue to decompose or decompose completely. Actual biodegradation rates will vary in biologically-active landfills according to the type of plastic used, the product configuration, and the solid content, temperature and moisture levels of the landfill.
