Functions of the dermal-epidermal junction include: layer-to-layer adherence, epidermal mechanical support, and cellular exchange across the junction. The epidermal-dermal junction is made up of four layers: the basal cell plasma membrane, the lamina lucida, the basal lamina, and the sub-basal lamina.

The dermal-epidermal junction (Dermoepidermal junction/basement membrane) is two-layered. At this junction, the epidermis (top layer of skin) gathers nutrients and expels waste. The dermal-epidermal junction is highly irregular when skin is young. This bond allows for the passing of nutrients across the junction, which can help reduce the visible signs of aging. When skin ages, the dermal-epidermal junction flattens, which leads to visible signs of aging.
