About Omega-3 & EFA
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are the “good” polyunsaturated fats found abundantly in deep sea fish such as mackerel, herring and sardines. They are called essential because we need them throughout our entire lives for optimal health and well-being. Unfortunately our body cannot make EFA’s so we must get them from our diet.
Early signs of EFA deficiency:
- Depression
- Mood swings
- Fatigue
- Poor memory
- Poor circulation
- Cardiovascular problems
- Dry skin
- Hair loss
- Weakened immune function
- Reproductive problems (both genders)
The three most important EFAs are Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) and Omega-6 (GLA). The typical American diet provides plenty of Omega-6, but unfortunately lacks sufficient amounts of Omega-3. To avoid the serious symp of EFA deficiency, it is therefore incredibly important that we obtain additional Omega-3 from high quality supplements.
EPA for a “Healthy Body”
Studies show that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), found in deep sea, cold water fish is essential for good cardiovascular health and is beneficial for reducing inflammation that causes disorders such as arthritis, asthma and allergies.
Cardiovascular Health
Numerous studies show that EPA is beneficial for heart health by reducing the risk of sudden death from heart attacks. Omega-3 helps maintainhealthy cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association even recommends that “people who have elevated triglycerides may need two to four grams of EPA and DHA per day provided as a supplement.”
Psychotherapeutic Action
Studies have associated low seafood consumption with major depression, postpartum depression, schizophrenia and other depressive symp. Although in its early phases, studies have shown that EPA may be beneficial for depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Omega-3 has also been shown to reduce mood swings and improve our ability to concentrate.
DHA for a “Healthy Mind & Brain”
DHA (docosahexaneoic acid) is a major building block of cells in the brain and in the retina of the eye. It therefore supports a healthy brain and good vision.
Protection Against Stress
DHA has been proven beneficial in reducing aggression and hostility associated with psychological stress. It has also been found to protect against the increased risk of heart attack as a result of stress and depression.
Learning and Cognition
According to clinical trials, insufficient amounts of DHA in the body may be a risk factor for age-related cognitive impairments like Alzheimer’s Disease.
Pregnancy and Nursing
Omega-3 appears to be especially beneficial for the overall health of both the mother and the child during pregnancy and nursing. Too little Omega-3 consumption by the mother may cause premature birth and low birth weight, diabetes and post-partum depression. DHA seems to be vital for the infants’ cognitive and visual development. Due to environmental toxins found in many kinds of fish, it is imperative that increased Omega-3 consumption take place via molecularly distilled
Omega-3 supplements.
FAQ’s
Can I get enough Omega-3 and EFA’s from my diet?
Our diets are typically too high in Omega-6 EFA’s which are present in processed foods and vegetable oils, such as corn and safflower oil. We need more Omega-3 EFA’s which come from cold water fish such as mackerel, anchovies and sardines. It is difficult to get enough Omega-3 from diet alone; therefore quality fish oil supplements are the easiest way to balance the equation.
Can I take Omega-3 with my current supplements?
Yes. Omega-3 is natural and extremely compatible with virtually every supplement available. Its effectiveness and safety of use is making Omega-3 one of the most popular and strongly recommended nutritional supplements in the world.
When can I expect results?
Many of our customers report an enhanced feeling of well being, clearer thinking and more energy in just a week or two. As it depends on many factors, including your current state of health, diet, dosage and concentration of the oils, noticeable effects may take up to eight weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Fish oils are very safe, however if you have medical conditions such as diabetes or are taking blood thinners, please check with your healthcare practitioner.
Quality Matters
Our environment and our oceans are unfortunately contaminated with toxins, pollutants, heavy metals, and dioxins. The government cautions against eating too much seafood which can contain these toxins. A high quality supplement is the safest and most effective method of adding an important component like Omega-3 to your diet. When selecting your Omega-3 source, it is critical that you choose a reputable brand with excellent quality.
