Completed in 2013, AREDS2 was a 5-year clinical study2 including thousands of patients, conducted by the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The AREDS3 and AREDS2 studies showed that taking a supplement with a precise formula of select vitamins and minerals can help reduce the risk of progression in people with moderate to advanced AMD. The latest study replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin. PreserVision AREDS 2 formula contains the updated formula now recommended by the National Eye Institute.
Can a daily multivitamin alone provide the same vision benefits as an AREDS2 formulation? No. The vitamins and minerals tested in the AREDS and AREDS2 trials were provided in much higher doses than what is found in multivitamins. Also, it is important to remember that most of the trial participants took multivitamins. Taking an AREDS formulation clearly provided a benefit over and above multivitamins.4

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. Central vision is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail, but causes no pain.
In some cases, AMD advances so slowly that people notice little change in their vision. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes.5 AMD is a leading cause of blindness in Americans 65 years of age and older.6

The exact cause of AMD is unknown, and some risk factors can’t be modified, such as age, heredity, and having light skin or eye color. However, you can reduce other risk factors, by quitting smoking, losing weight, managing cholesterol levels and hyper-tension, and reducing your exposure to UV light.
Diet and nutrition are also important factors. Unfortunately, many of us do not consume enough eye healthy foods in our diets.7
