Many professionals believe the pain is the result of contractures and muscle tightening while sleeping. Studies have demonstrated that sleeping in a night splint can materially lessen morning pain. The painful stretching process is eliminated by avoiding footdrop and accompanying muscle tightening. The foot plate is set in 5 degrees dorsiflexion.
