Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition which culminates in lower levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the macula and, consequently, lowers macular optical pigment density (MOPD). A six-year study showed that AMD is, at least in part, a nutrition-responsive disorder and that supplementation, particularly with lutein, can improve eye function and slow progression of the disease. Average eye MOPD increased 50% in both the lutein and lutein plus antioxidant treatment groups. Lutein and lutein/antioxidant treatments significantly improved the visual function parameters, including glare recovery, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity.
