This inspiration for this Susho was Vincent Van Gogh's Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers, painted in Arles, France. Vincent van Gogh was born in Holland, where sunflowers are ubiquitous, and he painted many variations throughout his life. In 1888, Paul Gauguin invited van Gogh for a visit at his house in Arles, along with other artists, the plan was to paint together and share experiences.
Earlier, while they were both in Paris, Gauguin traded one of his own paintings for 2 of van Gogh¡¯s sunflower paintings, so van Gogh knew his host enjoyed his sunflowers. He decided to paint a series of 5 as a gift, this is one of them. The yellow monochromatic palate was meant to resemble a candle, providing literal and metaphoric light.
One of Van Gogh¡¯s most popular works, the original is hanging in London¡¯s National Gallery. Van Gogh love of layering paint, creating texture to evoke meaning, is beautifully recreated by our silk artists' mastery of layering stitches.
