Design
Available in a wide variety of unique color schemes from purple to red to taupe (all paired with silver accents), the Panasonic RP-HXD3W has a clean, simple supra-aural (on-ear) design. The ear pads and underside of the headband are not actually cushioned, but instead made of a soft, rubbery material that uses air it captures as its padding. The result is not exactly the most comfortable design we've ever worn (particularly the headband's pressure on the scalp), but it's not exceedingly uncomfortable either—and one advantage here is the material seems to stay cooler than leather or cloth ear pads, which can get hot over time.
An inline remote and microphone allow for answering calls, playing and pausing music, and skipping tracks—but there's no volume control, which would be more of a real annoyance on a more expensive model. Call clarity is about what you'd expect—nothing sounds crystal clear with cellular fidelity, but your call partner will at least understand you. The RP-HXD3W is light on accessories—no carrying pouch or 1/4-inch adapter, just a single cable adapter for Nokia-style headphone jacks.
Performance
At maximum (and unsafe) listening levels, the RP-HXD3W flirts with distortion on tracks with intense sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," but it never gives in—the delivery remains clean while the headphones themselves vibrate so much at this level it feels like they are distorting a bit. It hardly matters, since no one should be listening at these levels, and at moderate-to-loud volumes, the Panasonic RP-HXD3W delivers deep bass without any hint of distortion. This is not a pair for heavy bass fiends, but those who enjoy a slightly boosted, rich, low-frequency response should be pleased.
