Peter and Jane books published first in 1964, this series was to be used by parents and schools throughout the UK.

Over 100 million copies have been sold round the world.

All of the books are  hardback volumes with 56 pages each, measuring 112×170 mm.

Each book has text on a left page and an illustration on the facing right page.

The Key Words with Peter and Jane books are so successful because each of the key words is introduced gradually and repeated frequently. This builds confidence in children when they recognise these key words on sight.

The Key Words scheme is based on a recognition of the fact that just 12 words make up one quarter of all the English words we read and write and that 100 words make up a half of those we use in a normal day. Teach children these key words first, and they are well on the way to making some sense of most texts.

So, step by step, page by page, these words are introduced and repeated (one might say hammered) to reinforce them as the length and difficulty of the texts increase.

This is reassuring and confidence building for the young reader.

Ladybird - Keywords with Peter and Jane (Full Set of 36 books) has 12 levels, each level come with 3 books: a, b & c.

Series a: Gradually introduces and repeats new words.

Series b: Provides further practise of these same words but in a different context and with different illustrations.

Series c: Invites children to start writing the words and introduces reading using phonics, enabling children to read increasingly difficult words.
