Product Description

"Tarantul III" is the NATO code name for the Russian type 1241.1M corvette. This variant was developed from the type 1241.1 "Tarantul I" when the rocket missile armament proved inadequate and outdated. "Tarantuls" were used in parallel with the "Nanuchka" type equipped with twin-container PKR "Moskit" anti-ship missile launchers ("Moskit" is known as the SS-N-22 "Sunburn" in the NATO code). The "M" in the designation of the corvette type stands for "Moskit". The missiles increased significantly the firepower of the ship and this， combined with the type's good sea going characteristics， led the Navy to place an increased order， while recuding the number of "Tarantul Is". During three years the shipyards at Lenigrad (now Petersburg) and Khabarovsk built 26 vessels. These vessels are used in missile ship flotillas mixed up with the earlier "Tarantul" variants.
