Why the side pockets are not join together, is to allow the boot tray the flexibility to be fold up by the user and for them to access to the compartment below the car boot easily, if the design that both side pockets are join together the user will face problem of folding up the boot tray due to the obstruction of the confine area of the two side pockets.
