Skin and mucous membranes are made of this type of tissue. Beta carotene is a provitamin A. It is a major carotenoid in skin and supports healthy function of a wide variety of organs including cells of the skin, small intestine, and colon. Beta carotene acts as an antioxidant in the skin by quenching high-energy molecules known as singlet molecular oxygen and scavenging other components (reactive oxygen species) that are a normal byproduct of cell function. Beta carotene is a natural precursor for retinoids, compounds that are used in the eyes to sense light. Vitamin A enhances night vision and helps support eye health.
