As a piece of furniture, a TV definitely leaves something to be desired. Of course, when it''s on everyone wants a good view. But when the set''s turned off, no one wants to look at a blank screen. An entertainment armoire provides a great solution-once the program, movie or game is over, everything disappears behind closed doors. The main compartment of this do-it-yourself version measures 34 inches tall by 32 inches across, just right for a wide variety of TVs. There''s a shelf for a cable or satellite receiver above the TV, and the lower cabinet holds a DVD player, sound system or VCR. In between, a big storage drawer keeps DVDs and video game cartridges handy. Simple and inexpensive to build, the project is made mostly from plywood and pine is used for the facing, trim and doors (as pictured; other species will work). Although lumber prices vary, this armoire was built for about 20 percent of the cost of a ready-made unit. Overall, the project measures 70 inches tall by 39 inches wide by 23 inches deep.
