It is brushed aluminum metal (not plastic) with a clear lens and seems well built. For me, the ticking is not noticed as others have stated. The depth of the clock is 1.75 inches and makes a prominent presence on the wall. So, if you are looking for a thin wall clock, this might not be the one for you. I had it delivered to my home and, despite the very poor packaging by some employee, the clock itself arrived in good shape. It came in a very large box with very little packing material. So, the clock, thankfully in it's protective display box, bounced freely inside damaging the clock's box but not the clock.
