Here in Japan, meals are sometimes served on Western-style plates, but more often Japanese-style are used. The Bento offers the possibility to keep many small meals in a single case wihtout the mess. The Bento was originally a take-away meal, similar to the sandwich, which are simply wrapped in paper or newsprint. Simple dishes like rice balls are wrapped in plastic.
