痔疮是肛门静脉曲张所形成的静脉团，经大便摩擦而破裂出血或形成血栓并引起剧痛。痔疮分为内痔、外痔及混合痔三种。发生在肛管齿状线以上的为内痔，内痔一般不痛，以便血、痔核脱出为主要症状，严重时会喷血、痔核脱出后不能自行还纳，还有大便困难、便后擦不干净、有坠胀感等。
长期痔疮会造成排便困难、便血、疼痛等症状，尤其在年过中旬的患者中尤为常见，很多人习以为常小看痔疮，却不知道小小痔疮会给身体带来巨大的隐患。严重会导致贫血、昏迷、心梗。
肛肠专家指出，有高血压、动脉硬化、冠心病等心血管慢性病的中老年朋友，可千万不要小瞧痔疮。痔疮会引发和加重便秘，造成排便时加大力量，用力使腹内压升高，血压也随之升高，发生昏迷、脑出血和急性心肌梗死而猝死的可能性大大增加。亚健康的中年患者痔疮久拖也会吃大亏，长期的痔疮便血会加重身体的负担，容易引起贫血等症状，而且患有痔疮、肛瘘、肛裂、肛窦炎和直肠息肉的患者，肛管直肠肿瘤的发生率要比正常人高出很多。
