Uncle Charlie, a frail 80-year-old, loves this time of the year. His childlike enthusiasm is contagious as he eagerly looks forward to ushering in the Lunar New Year. Small pleasures in an otherwise difficult life! A resident of the AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens, Uncle Charlie is one amongst several other underprivileged elderly who call the place ‘home’!!
“Before I came to the Community Home, I stayed at the canteen where I worked as a cleaner, for over 5 years. My ex-employer told me to leave the canteen after he rented it out to someone else and I was left homeless. Unfortunately, bad things happened one after another. I fell down and fractured my spine and had to be hospitalised. That was how I came here.”
“Charlie was once a broken, sad and unresponsive destitute. AWWA’s Community Home for Senior Citizens changed all that with its compassionate care so that others like him can have a life of hope, dignity and independent living.” says his case worker.
Uncle Charlie is one of life’s naturally cheerful people. With his harmonica always at hand, he breaks into a chirpy Chinese New Year tune that belies his situation. Despite his unfair share of misfortunes, he is determined to live life fully and independently, moving around with the aid of a walking frame.
Listen to Uncle Charlie play a Lunar New Year song!

Community Chest raises funds on a yearly basis to meet the needs of the social service programmes it supports. Community Chest ensures that fund-raising and other operating costs are kept to a minimum. As these costs are covered mainly by Tote Board and Singapore Pools, every dollar raised by Community Chest will be made available to social service programmes under its care.
About the Care & Share @ SG50 Movement
Care & Share is a national fund-raising and volunteerism movement led by Community Chest for the social service sector, in celebration of SG50 this year. It aims to bring our nation together to show care and concern for the needy and recognise contributions made by voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs). Eligible donations raised by Community Chest and participating VWOs from now till 31 March 2016 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the government. The matched amount will go towards building the capabilities and capacities of the social service sector and supporting social services to meet rising needs.
