When you first start the Pill, taking it can seem pretty complicated. You’ll be glad to know that it’s pretty simple once you know the facts, and it gets easier with time.

Mercilon comes in both 21 and 28-day packs. They’re really the same except for the last seven days in a strip. Regardless of which pack you choose, all pill cycles are 28 days long.

With the 21-day packs, you take one pill daily for 21 days. This is followed by seven hormone-free days, during which time your period will come.

The 28-day pill strip contains 21 pills with hormones and 7 pills without hormones, also known as “placebos”. With this pack, you’ll need to take one tablet every day, even during your withdrawal bleed.

To ensure that you are completely protected, take your pill at the same time, every day. Doing this keeps your body’s hormones at consistent levels necessary to prevent pregnancy.

How do I know the Pill is right for me?

The Pill is 99% effective, which is why it is one of the most reliable contraceptives today. In comparison, the intrauterine device is 98-99% effective and the male condom is 98% effective. But every woman’s need is unique. The Pill is a good choice if you are looking for a contraceptive that:

is easy to use and is safe
is suitable from the teen to menopausal years
has contraceptive effects that are quickly reversible
results in reduced menstrual bleeding and fewer cramps
results in shorter and more regular periods
can also have a number of other non-contraceptive health benefits

However, always remember that the Pill doesn’t provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases. If you are at risk of contracting an STD, always use a condom when you engage in any form of sexual contact, especially intercourse.

Is the Pill suitable for everyone?

The Pill is an excellent choice for millions of women, but it is not suitable for everyone.

For example, the Pill is not recommended for women over 35 years of age who smoke. Speak to a doctor about your options and whether the Pill’s benefits to you outweigh the possible risks for your particular situation.

What else should I know about the pill?

Don’t lend your pills, even to your friends. Every woman must make an individual, informed decision about whether the Pill is right for her. Avoid borrowing a different brand of the Pill too – each brand has different levels of hormones and your body needs time to adjust to each one.

Tell your doctor you’re taking Mercilon if you’re scheduled for surgery or are in need of prolonged rest. Under these circumstances, doctors may recommend that women stop taking the Pill one month before to reduce the risk of developing blood clots.

Mercilon is generally safe to take until menopause. It may even protect against osteoporosis and specific reproductive cancers.

It’s always wise to perform a breast self-exam (BSE) regularly, and to have a complete physical examination once a year. Include a Pap smear test if you are sexually active.

How Do I Start ?

Mercilon allows you to control your own menstrual cycle. Before you begin your first pack, ask yourself some questions. For example, what day of the week would you like to begin each pill cycle? Do you want to avoid getting your period on weekends? Answering these questions will help you decide which start method is best for you.

Method One: Day One Start

This is the easiest way to begin, especially if you’re first-time user. All you need to do is take the first pill on the first day of your period. This is considered “Day One”.

With the 21-day pack, the pills are marked with the days of the week. Be sure to pick the pill that matches whatever day of the week you start with. You then take one pill at the same time every day, following the direction of the arrows on the blister pack. These markings are there to help you keep track of whether you’ve taken your pill for the day.

Wait seven days after the pills are finished. Then start a new pack and begin the process all over again.

The 28-day pill strip contains 21 pills with hormones and 7 pills without hormones, also known as “placebos”. Take one pill around the same time everyday until all the 28 pills are finished.

Mercilon becomes effective as birth control after you’ve taken the pills for seven consecutive days. Until then, don’t forget to use a barrier contraceptive during sex.

Method Two: Sunday Start

Take your first pill on the first Sunday after your period begins. Make sure, however, this is not more than seven days after the first day of your period. You then continue taking your pills around the same time every day, until you finish the pack.

The disadvantage of this method is you’ll need to use another form of birth control for the first month. But many women use a Sunday Start because there’s a good chance they won’t get their periods on weekends.
