Collagen
Collagen is the main protein in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and accounts for 70% of dermis protein content. The major function is to maintain the stability of dermis and work against stress. Type I (85%), type III (15%) and type V (5%) collagens are the main contents in the ECM of dermis. The activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) in ECM increases with the age or is affected by environmental factors (e.g., UV irradiation and smoking). The increased activity of MMP results in most of the large molecules’ decomposition in ECM, which induces skin aging including wrinkles and skin thinning. Therefore, collagen can provide the ingredients of collagen generation and restore collagen in skin.
Vitamin C
Fibroblasts in dermis can promote the biosynthesis of collagen, in which the step needs Vitamin C to participate! Inhibits the activity of tyrosinase and, therefore, helps reduce melanin in skin.
