The SYMA X51 is relatively new onto the drone market. What first drew me towards it is it’s unique design and incredibly small size – from front to back it measures in at around 143mm long and 71mm tall! Indeed, the two front props are angled in a particular way where they are aligned on top of each other.

I was very interested to see how this would effect the flying performance on this micro quad as I have literally never seen any other quad designed in this way before!

The First Flight Test

The only way to test a new quad is to fly it. I took the X51 outside for its first ever flight and… well it was really windy. This made controlling the micro quad a real challenge and thus I found it hard to enjoy flying this little machine. I guess this shows that the X51 does not fly well in windy conditions.

Being a little disappointed, I too the X51 into my house and did a few more tests. This time, however, with the lack of wind, I had complete control over the quad and thus I became quite surprised by how fast the micro quad was. It’s speed coupled with its sharp handling made the X51 really fun to fly. One thing I don’t like is how ‘clicky’ the controller buttons are – it makes the quad seem really cheap and fragile.

I also think that the two front prop’s that are on top of each other look pretty cool but cause the pilot to have to correct themselves whenever you twist or yaw as the micro quad would tend to spin out.

General Information

Speeds: There are two different speed options – high speed and low speed. The low speed is perfect for complete beginners but for me I found it too slow and therefore used the high speed. Use the low speed if it is a windy day as even the slightest bit of wind can influence the quads flight path.

Flips: Press the left trigger and the directional leaver (in any direction – up, down, left, right) and the X51 will flip or roll. Make sure you do this at leas 10 feet in the air as the quad will lose some height during the stunt. Also, the two front prop’s on top of each other mean that you need to be ready to correct the line of flight or the quad will spin out.

Automatic Cruise: On paper I thought this was going to allow me to set my own trajectory and have the quad automatically follow. This was not the case, I guess the quad already has a preset, and it just follows that. Although, I dont believe I have gotten it to work correctly. I will try again and report back.

Level Correction: If the trims are not properly balancing your quad, or it’s just not flying straight, set the quad on a flat surface, and pull put thumb sticks down and to the right and hold for a few seconds. This will re calibrate the quad, and hopefully fly straight again.

6) Auto Level Calibration
6.1 If the quadcopter keeps drifting in one direction and this cannot be rectified using the trim adjustment buttons, the quadcopter needs to be recalibrated.
6.2 Ensuring that the surface is level. Move the two levers on the controller to the bottom right corner until the quadcopter LED indicator flashes.
6.3 The quadcopter is now recalibrated and ready for use.
