Studio : Merchant Ambassador Publisher : Merchant Ambassador Binding : Toy Product Description Discovered in 1831 on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, the Lewis Chessmen (or Uig chessmen, named after the bay where they were found) are one of the oldest chess sets in the Western world. They are believed to be of Scandinavian origin, most likely made in Trondheim, Norway during the late 12th or early 13th centuries. The pieces were discovered buried in a chest after a snad bank collapsed. The chess pieces were mostly carved out of walrus with a few pieces made from whales teeth. This beautiful set has been sculpted and moulded following the original pieces and all are intricately carved, finely detailed and character infused. 0
