First of all, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. At the bottom of the esophagus is a ring-shaped muscle known as the upper esophageal sphincter, which acts as an upper valve. Lower esophageal sphincter (LES) allows food to enter the stomach and prevents stomach acid from returning to the esophagus. For some people, the LES muscle opens properly and does not close. When stomach acid is refluxed into the esophagus, it may give a burning sensation to the chest. Because the esophagus does not have the same protective lining as the above, it can cause chest pain by stimulating sensitive tissues.

What foods can cause heartburn?
