FAQ's
What results can I expect from my Philips Lumea?
To achieve long-lasting, smooth and hair-free skin with your Philips Lumea IPL hair removal system, it is important that you keep the following in mind:
Use Lumea once every two weeks for the first 2 months.
This results in 75% hair reduction on average (measured on legs, after initial 4–5 treatments, individual results vary). After these initial treatments, repeat the process every four to eight weeks to keep skin smooth and hair-free.
Is Philips Lumea suitable for all skin and hair types?
No, Philips Lumea is not suitable for all skin and hair types. Find out for which skin tones and hair types Philips Lumea is suitable.
Lumea Skin and hair suitability
IPL treatment works because the energy of the light is absorbed by the melanin (type of pigment) of the hair. Since blonde, grey and white hairs do not contain any or enough melanin, IPL treatment will never work on these hair colours. Red hair contains a different type of melanin which is not responsive to IPL.
Always check the skin tone/hair colour chart . Use the light intensity (setting 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) that is recommended for you. If the treatment feels uncomfortable, reduce the intensity. The treatment should not feel painful at any time.
Different areas of the body can be more sensitive than others. Simply adapt the intensity according to the sensation you experience.
Are there warnings or cautions for using Philips Lumea?
Philips Lumea has been developed with your safety in mind. However, it is important to note that it is not suitable for certain situations and conditions.
Skin and body hair type
IPL treatment works because the energy of the light is absorbed by the melanin (type of pigment) of the hair. Since blonde, grey and white hairs do not contain any melanin, IPL treatment will never work on these hair colours. Red hair contains a different type of melanin which is not responsive to IPL.
Lumea is also not suitable for naturally dark skin tone, as it can cause skin damage, such as burns, blisters or discolouring. Check the skin types and body hair colour chart to see if Philips Lumea is suitable for you. A unique skin colour sensor is incorporated in Philips Lumea models SC1981-1985 and SC1996, SC1997, SC1999, BRI86x, which ensures that a pulse will be emitted only on suitable skin colours.
Please perform a new skin test after tanning to determine the appropriate light intensity setting.
Medical condition
Philips Lumea should not be used by women with medical conditions such as skin cancer, lesions, epilepsy, vascular disorders, immunosuppressive disorders or skin allergies to light. If you take any medications: Please check the information for your prescription to find out whether it can potentially cause photosensitivity. If it can, do not use Philips Lumea. Other medications may cause a reaction, so please consult your doctor before use.
Can I use Philips Lumea all year round?
Yes. You can use your Lumea all year round, including summer. But, if possible, start the treatment in autumn, winter or spring to enjoy a smooth and hair-free summer. There are, however, precautions to be taken before and after tanning. With tanning we mean sunbathing; it is okay to have some sunlight on your skin from being outside.
What areas of my body can I treat?
Lumea is designed for unisex use on areas below the neck, including the legs, underarms, bikini line, arms, chest and back. Females can also use on facial hair below the cheekbone. Men should not use it on their face due to the density of facial hair.
