Lamisil general information

What is Lamisil used for?

Lamisil cream 1% is a topical medication used to treat fungal infection of the skin, primarily infection with tinea pedis or ringworm of the foot, commonly known as athlete’s foot. Lamisil cream can also be used for tinea infection in other parts of the body, including: ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), the groin (tinea cruris; jock itch), and tinea versicolor known as "sun fungus” (pityriasis versicolor). Lamisil cream is also used to treat Candida infection of the skin (cutaneous candidiasis).

How does Lamisil work?

Lamisil cream 1% contains terbinafine, a broad spectrum antifungal drug that is used to treat a variety of fungal infections, and is particularly effective against dermatophyte fungi such as Trichophyton fungi that cause tinea infections in different parts of the body; also yeasts like Candida that cause candidiasis or thrush. Terbinafine in Lamisil cream 1% inhibits a fungal enzyme, squalene epoxidase, which prevents the synthesis of ergosterol, a sterol that is the main component of the fungal cell membrane. The result is that the fungal cell membrane becomes weakened causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus and prevents the infection from spreading, relieving symptoms caused by the infection, including, itching and inflammation.

Several parts of the body can be affected and the fungus is often named after the site of infection; these include, ringworm of the foot, also known as Athlete's foot (tinea pedis), of the body (tinea corporis), of the groin (tinea cruris or jock itch), of the scalp (tinea capitis. Terbinafine in Lamisil cream 1% contains inhibits a fungal enzyme, squalene epoxidase, which prevents the synthesis of ergosterol, the main component of the fungal cell membrane. Composition :

Terbinafine hydrochloride cream 1% 10 mg/g

Excipients : Sodium hydroxide; benzyl alcohol; sorbitan monostearate;cetyl palmitate;cetyl alcohol;stearyl alcohol;polysorbate 60; isopropyl myristate; demineralised water.

Properties :

Terbinafine is an allylamine which has a broad spectrum of antifungal activity. At low concentrations terbinafine is fungicidal against dermatophytes, moulds and certain dimorphic fungi. The activity against yeasts is fungicidal or fun-gistatic, depending on the species.

Terbinafine interferes specifically with fungal sterol biosynthesis at an early step. This leads to a deficiency in ergosterol and to an intracellular accumulation of squalene, resulting in fungal cell death. Terbinafine acts by inhibition of squalene epoxidase in the fungal cell membrane. The enzyme squalene expoxidase is not linked to the cytochrome P450 system. Terbinafine does not influence the metabolism of hormones or other drugs.

Lamisil Cream has a rapid onset of action and can be effective with a short treatment duration.

Pharmacokinetics :

Less than 5% of the dose is absorbed after topical application to humans; systemic exposure is thus very slight.

Indications :

Fungal infections of the skin and nails caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton (e.g. T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T.verrucosum, T.violaceum) Microporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum.

Yeast infection of the skin, principally those caused by the genus Candida

Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, due to pityrosporum ovale (also know as Malassezia furfur)

Dosage and administration :

The duration of treatment varies according to the indication and the severity of the infection.

Lamisil Cream can be applied once or twice daily. Clean and dry the effected areas thoroughly before treating with LAMISIL CREAM.
