History

As terriers, Yorkies were originally bred to chase rats and mice in textile mills. However, well-heeled Victorian-era English families took note of their small size and beautiful coats, and the transition from working dog to toy dog began. Other toy breeds, such as the Australian silky terrier and teacup yorkie have their roots in this breed. As dog aficionados would guess, Yorkies were originally bred from English terriers. They were introduced in England by Scottish immigrants, and the rest is history. Today they are the seventh most popular dog breed; quite impressive considering their start as rat catchers.
