Mirage Hobby Rocket Launcher s.W.u.R. 40/28cm Model Kit

Product Description

Rocket missiles, recently preferred by all sorts of ground and air forces, date back to the Chinese Empire. It was there that the gunpowder was invented. Powder charges were attached to arrows and set in wooden framing (launch pads) and fired by lighting the fuse. Such arrows could hit tight formations of enemy troops or set fortifications on fire. In spate of poor accuracy, they caused panic in enemy lines. These ideas found their continuation during WWII, when looking for more and more new weapon types. The Soviets developed their "Katyusha" missile launchers which acted more by their psychological effect than by accurate fire. In any case they brought the attention of the Germans to this weapon. Several types of rocket powered artillery shells were developed and introduced into service during the war. One of these was the solid propellant missile (the propellant is pressed hard inside a tube, released electrically) with solid explosive charge. These missiles were placed in a wooden box which also served as the launcher. They could be fired directly from the ground with the vertical angle set by the natural elevation of the ground support, or by placing rod-type supports, or in sets of four missiles in special wooden or metal frames (tubes or profiles). Such launchers were used, among others, for shelling Warsaw during the 1944 Uprising. A single hit could destroy a block of building.
