This pediatric pulse oximeter functions just lit a regular pulse oximeter, except this model is designed to fit smaller fingers. This unit has a smaller opening and tighter finger compression area so the sensors can be attached to their fingers properly to get an accurate reading. In particular, since a finger tip pulse oximeter shines two lights (red and infrared) through the finger and then computes the oxygen saturation based on the amount of light absorbed by the body, the design of a Pediatric Pulse Oximeter needs to be made so that even small fingers provide enough surface area for a reliable reading between the light sources and their sensors. Our children's pulse oximeters are designed to provide the proper reading on even the smallest fingers of children as young as 3 years old and as old as 12 years old.
