Getting The Best From Reed Diffuser Sticks

The idea behind a reed diffuser is quite straightforward and very similar to that of an oil evaporator, except that in the case of a diffuser reeds are used as a means of absorbing the fragrant oil.

Reed diffusers are the best alternative to candles. Vibrant scents. No risk of fire. Reed diffusers have a wonderful aromatic scent while being flame-free. Absolutely no heat is needed. This makes them safe for classrooms, offices, nursing homes, homes. Each 3 mm reed stick contains 20 or more individual cellular sections that run from top to bottom of the reed- like 20 micro-mini straws, totally open to pull liquid from bottom to top. This wicks the fragrance from inside the bottle, carries it to the top surface of the reed, and releases the fragrance into the air naturally.

A typical reed diffuser comprises a number of rattan reeds, which effectively act as the wick. Using the correct type of reeds is essential since rattan has an absorbent honeycomb structure, differing in this respect from wood or bamboo. Neither wood nor bamboo are appropriate for use in scented diffusers, because they do not allow the scented oil to be absorbed properly.

Around a dozen slender reeds are sufficient to provide a subtle fragrance for most average size rooms. If, however, you prefer a lighter aroma or you are using the diffuser in a small room, such as a bathroom, you may choose to use less than this amount of reeds, thereby producing a more delicate fragrance. The reeds are placed in a container, usually a bottle or jar, into which the Essential oil or Fragrant oil has been placed.

The oil then works its way up the reeds by capillary action and is dispersed into the surrounding air through via reed stems. Since no flame or smoke is involved reed diffusers lend a room a delicate, unadulterated fragrance. But to achieve this effect you must ensure not only that you use the correct type of reeds, but also that you use oil which is specifically intended for use in reed diffusers - normal fragrance oils, which you might find in an evaporator or oil burner are not suitable because they are too are too heavy and dense to work properly in a reed diffuser.

Make sure that you cut the reeds to roughly twice the height of the bottle you are using, so that half the reed is in the bottle and half out of it, while taking care to ensure your bottle is at least half full of oil. The amount of oil you use is a matter of judgment. If you do not use enough, the reed will not become properly infused with the fragrance or else the diffuser will run out prematurely.

Finally, do not be tempted to reuse reeds. After time, the Essential Oil/fragrant oil becomes thicker, while the reeds themselves may be blocked with dust, clogging up and preventing proper absorption.

Among the advantages that reed diffusers have over scented candles and other forms of home fragrance is that they provide a continuous fragrance, together with the fact there is no flame, and accordingly no risk of fire. They can be safely left to work while no-one is at home, unlike a scented candle which should not be left unattended once it has been lit. They are also more convenient than electrical diffusers since you can place them wherever you wish – you are not restricted to an area which has an electrical socket nearby. There is also no need to heat the oil in a reed diffuser. The diffuser works by capillary action so you enjoy the fragrant oil in its purest form.

Why can't I just re-use my sticks over and over again?

Once the sticks are totally saturated, the cells in the reeds get somewhat clogged and lose their ability to pull the scent up into the reeds and throw the fragrance into the room. Needless to say, you definitely can't move the reeds to a different scent of oil- because the cells will be clogged with the previous scent of fragrance diffuser oil. You won't get a pure scent transfer. Reeds are very inexpensive so you can replace them by having a small stock on hand in your favorite size.

My bottle is not empty but my fragrance doesn't seem to be diffusing?

Add new reeds and your Essential oil/Fragrance oil will start up again. Occasionally reeds may become saturated.

How long do Reed Diffusers last? How do I use them?

It's not possible to say precisely how long. They're subject to environmental factors: closed doors, open doors, dehumidifiers, air conditioning, etc.

Pour the oil into the diffuser bottle, insert sticks. Turn over once to expose oil-moistened sticks to air. The oil will continue to wick up the sticks and scent your room . Turn sticks occasionally to refresh scent~ once a week should be adequate. When the oil is finally used up, simply pour in an oil refill and replace the diffuser sticks.
