They are a plastic, metal like material which makes them light weight and weatherproof. Each lantern is battery operated with 3 AAA batteries (not included). They have a 3 way timer switch that gives you the opportunity to us the timer function installed on each light. It's a automatic 5-hour cycling timer, perfect for lighting the way when you need it, and saving battery when you don't. Lanterns measure approx. 12" tall but 13" when the loop is up and 5 1/2" wide.
