Proof Sets are a collection of coins produced by the United States Mint for collectors each year. They usually contain one of each coin produced in any given year in proof condition. SILVER Proof Sets are sets in which usually the quarters, dimes, and half dollar contain 90% Silver. We have a large selection of proof sets in our inventory. Proof coins were originally just special early samples of a type of coin before issue. They were historically made for checking the quality of the dies made to produce the coin and for the archives, but are now produced in greater quantities for numismatists (collectors). Proof coins are struck on highly polished planchets (coin blanks) using highly polished, and/or specially treated dies to produce what is often referred to as a Deep Cameo(DCAM) appearance which is the effect of the frosty images against a deep mirror background. Early proof coins did not have a large number of Deep Cameo specimens because as the dies were worn, the effect wore off and they didn''t have the resources or technology we have today to continually produce them.
