They love it. We spend the first afternoon putting together as a family, it took about two and a half hours. The instructions were easy to follow, but we have lots of experience with legos. It's not hard at all, and the overall result is impressive. I do wish Lego would give you two of the yellow containers; that way when it's on the train the look is more complete. It's not a problem to build your own container though if you have some spare pieces. I really appreciate that it comes with switch tracks. When I say "foundation" I mean that it's great for expanding off of. I interchange the freight cars with others from my old 9V train (set 2867), and the crane is double-wide meaning it spans two tracks underneath it.
