It has been billed as a ‘DIY filler treatment’ to plump out deep wrinkles and restore youthful skin without the need for injections. So it is ironic that makers of Fillerina have packaged the product in syringes. The idea isn’t only a (slightly alarming) marketing gimmick: this method allows users to squeeze the serum accurately along furrows in the face. The product contains hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that is naturally present in the body, and found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. A placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study published in the authoritative Journal Of Cosmetic Dermatology concluded that the product showed a ‘positive filling effect in decreasing the clinical signs of skin ageing and in improving the face volumes’. To put it to the test, I put Fillerina on my face for two weeks, using 1ml of clear gel, painstakingly squeezing it out along the deepest wrinkles on my forehead, around my eyes and at the sides of my mouth. I used another 1ml of product in a big sweep over my cheekbones and some on my lips. After ten minutes, when most of the gel had been absorbed, I ‘sealed’ it all in with some of the cream from the second bottle (which was too thick to draw up easily into the syringe, so I ended up just shaking it out). After two weeks of the syringe-and-gel routine, I spent a further two weeks using Fillerina’s day cream and night cream (this is the protocol followed by the test group in the clinical trial) before my final assessment. I could see that the product was being absorbed by my skin, and I think it is looking fuller and smoother, while my lips look noticeably plumper in the mornings. For an independent opinion, I had my skin assessed before and after at the Santi Skin Lab in South Kensington, Central London. Staff used a Cortex machine, state-of-the-art skin analysis equipment which is used in dermatological research worldwide. I thought my skin was looking good, but what the Cortex machine told me was little short of amazing. ‘There is a remarkable change in skin structure,’ said Tariq Karim, director of Santi Skin Lab. ‘The skin on the forehead shows a considerable improvement.’ The hydration level of my skin increased by a huge 29 per cent from the starting point. It’s elasticity also increased by 22 per cent and is nearly four per cent more dense than before, although Mr Karim felt that was because of the extra hydration, given that the product makes no claims to be stimulating collagen or elastin production, which are what normally account for skin density and elasticity. Obviously, it’s not the sort of ‘filling’ effect that you get with injectables, but it is a clear and measurable improvement. After years of writing about the beauty business, I have learned to take hyped-up promises with a pinch of salt, but I have to say I am very impressed. At £79 for a two-week course, it is expensive, but that’s far less than the cost of injectable treatments. It’s also pain-free and non-invasive.
