Over the centuries, our canal-filled water village developed into a beautiful city and attracted a large population of aristocrats, scholars and artists. Suzhou was called the Venice of the East by Marco Polo. During Imperial China, Suzhou's wealthiest residents build a series of private gardens that are unbelievably old and beautiful, 69 survived the centuries and today are popular tourist attractions.
These elaborate gardens are enormously popular in China and are a major status symbol. Suzhou's ancient gardens have been restored and are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
