An insufficient KH (carbonate hardness) level will suddenly change the stable pH of water! The rapid fluctuation of pH will severely impact aquarium life and ruin the normal ecological system. There is no normal and safe pH condition without a firm and stable KH value! To keep a balanced KH value is very important, rather than just simply measuring the pH of water. The safe KH value normally is 9-11 degrees for marine tanks to have a stable pH condition. With invertebrate aquariums, a fair KH condition is the key to maintaining the tank for a very long time. For freshwater plant aquariums, a relative KH condition is needed. For African cichlids, at least 3-5 degrees of KH is necessary.
