General Characteristics ofSilica Gel
Silica Gel is a high capacity adsorbent and desiccant consistingof granular highly porous silica. It can
adsorb up to 40% of its own weight of water in its internal poresby physical adsorption, there is no
chemical change or alteration in the form or bulk volume of thedesiccant.
Indicating silica gel (Orange) isbasically identical to white gel but contains a small quantity ofmoisture
sensitive indicating material. It turns orange to dark green whensaturated with moisture.

Protection With Silica Gel
THE PROBLEM
The presence of moisture in atmosphere air constitutes a majorproblem to all concerned with the
packaging of items for storage or despatch. If the relativehumidity in the package rises above 50%,
corrosion becomes possible. A further increase in the humidity willpermit mould growth on organic
base materials and, if condensation occurs, damage will extend tooptical systems due to smearing
of the optical surfaces.
Even a hermetically sealed container prepared under low humidityconditions is not safe since a drop
in temperature may raise the relative humidity to a dangerouslevel.
Packages utilising a vapour barrier such as polythene film areeven greater risk since barriers allow
moisture vapour transmission into the package.
THE SOLUTION
Silica gel will remove the moisture from the air inside a packageand reduce the relative humidity to a safe
level at which corrosion mould growth and other forms of moisturedamage cannot occur.
If the temperature of the pack falls, the silica gel willcontinue to adsorb moisture, maintaining safe conditions.
Even if moisture penetrates the pack from outside atmosphere, itis easy to provide sufficient silica gel to
cope with the incoming water vapour.

Just store your products in a airtight zip lock bag or container,then insert package of silica gel.

One cubic feet space require about 15g to 20g of silica gel
