In the old days they were used by the Peranakan Chinese to decorate their furniture and buildings. Peranakan Chinese believed the floral motifs and vibrant coloured background bring good fortune, longevity, wealth and prosperity to the family. Original Peranakan tiles can still be found in Perankan enclaves such as Emerald Hill, Joo Chiat, Ann Siang Hill, Geylang, Little India and Blair Plain. See photos below.
