What is a Pulse Oximeter?
The Fingertip Pulse Oximeter is a type of innovated medical device with a non-invasive and continuous feature that indirectly monitors the oxygen saturation of an user's blood as opposed to measuring oxygen saturation directly through a blood sample. This portable, battery-operated pulse oximeter also displays the heart rate.

What are the Benefits and Why do we need to use a Finger Pulse Oximeter?
A pulse oximeter can provide a good gauge of your overall health condition, respiratory rate, efficiency of your oxygen intake, detection for abnormalities in ventilation as well as health impact of your current activities. It is especially useful in any setting where an user's oxygenation is unstable or for assessment of the oxygenation level in order to determine the effectiveness of or the need for supplement of oxygen.
Because of their simiplicity of use and the ability to provide continuous and immediate oxygen saturation values, pulse oximeters are of critical importance in emergency medicine and are very useful for people with respiratory or cardiac problems or for diagnosis of sleep disorders. Portable pulse oximeters are also useful for mountain climbers and althletes whose oxygen levels may decrease at high altitudes or with exercise.
For a regular healthy person, the normal blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2 or Saturation of Peripheral Oxygen) should be around 94% to 99%. For people with mild respiratory problems, the SpO2 should be in the range of 90% and above. If the SpO2 level falls below 90% for a prolonged period of time, it is considered as unacceptable and you may want to consult with a doctor immediately.

How a Pulse Oximeter operates?
A typical pulse oximeter measures what percentage of hemoglobin, the protein in blood that carries oxygen, is loaded. It utilizes an electronic processor and a pair of small light-emitting diodes (LEDs) facing a photodiode through a translucent part of the user's body, usually a fingertip or an earlobe. One LED is red with wavelength of approximately 660nm and the other is infrared with a wavelength of 940nm. Absorption of light at these wavelengths differs significantly between blood loaded with oxygen and blood lacking oxygen. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more infrared light and allows more red light to pass through. The relative absorption of light by oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemmoglobin is processed by the device and an oxygen saturation level is reported. The pulse oximeter directs its attention at pulsatile arterial blood and ignores local noise from the tissues. The result is a continuous qualitative measurement of the user's oxyhemoglobin status.
